Name: Mauritius College of the Air
Region: Africa - Mauritius

Description:
Mauritius College of the Air was set up in 1985 as a parastatal organisation to promote education, arts, science and culture generally through mass media and distance education methods. It carries out its activities through the following three divisions: the Media Division, the Distance Education Division, and the Natural Resource Centre.

Media Division:
In this information age, communication is the sine-qua-non tool for development. The Media Division is engaged in the production, broadcast, distribution, lending and sale of educational audio and video programmes.

It produces supplementary and enrichment programmes for the formal educational sector at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. It is also engaged in non-formal education for the general public via sensitisation campaigns and programmes to upgrade the general level of education in the country. The Graphics and Printing department designs and prints support materials for the above. On the 1 September 1997, the Learning Channel was launched, thus increasing MCA airtime to 20 hours a week. Programmes are broadcast from 2.00pm to 6.00pm Monday to Friday on the national television network.

The MCA also runs workshops for heads of schools and teachers to train them in the use of audio-visual technology. In its endeavour to bring education to the doorstep of one and all, the MCA will soon be running a mobile library to service needy schools and remote areas. This democratisation process will ensure that educational programmes are sold at a nominal fee, within the reach of those who most need a boost to their education.
